Donis Cuts Saudi World Cup Squad Amid Selection Debate
Saudi Arabia’s squad for the World Cup has been trimmed down after an initial 30-man camp in the United States, prompting widespread discussion among fans over the final omissions from the Green Falcons’ roster for their seventh tournament appearance.
Before the final decision was made, several supporters questioned why certain players were left out, including Rayan Hamed of Al-Ahli, Muhannad Al-Shanqeeti of Al-Ittihad, Hammam Al-Hammami of Al-Shabab, and Abdulaziz Al-Aliwa of Al-Kholood, with many believing they deserved a place in the squad.
From the wider 30-man group, few had anticipated that Zakaria Hawsawi and Saleh Abu Al-Shamat would miss out, while the selection of four goalkeepers meant one would inevitably be cut, with Abdulqudous Attiah ultimately being the one to drop out.
Another notable exclusion was Abdullah Al-Salem, who impressed during the 2024/25 season with Al-Khaleej under Donis before joining Al-Qadsiah, where limited playing time reportedly affected his chances.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that fitness concerns played a key role in the omission of both Hawsawi and Abu Al-Shamat from the final 26-man squad.
