Football Fever Grows as Uzbekistan Secures First World Cup Berth
Uzbekistan’s opening World Cup match against Colombia in Mexico City on June 17 is being celebrated as a landmark moment, reflecting the nation’s remarkable progress in football over recent years.
The growing enthusiasm for the sport was evident last month when around 30,000 supporters filled the national stadium in Tashkent for a farewell match before the team, known as the White Wolves, headed to North America.
Among them was 22-year-old fan Abdusaid Ruzimatov, who praised the country’s rapid development in football. He pointed to the success of Uzbekistan’s national teams across multiple age groups, noting that the nation has emerged as one of Asia’s strongest footballing forces.
Uzbekistan’s youth sides have captured continental titles at under-17, under-20 and under-23 level, while the senior team has established itself as a consistent challenger in Asian football.
