AFC Extraordinary Congress 2026 Approves Key Statute Changes in Tokyo
Delegates gathered in Tokyo, Japan, for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Extraordinary Congress 2026, where they voted to approve a package of vital amendments to the AFC Statutes.
According to the confederation, the updates were formulated in response to extraordinary circumstances stemming from impending changes by FIFA to the international football calendar. Following consultations with world football’s governing body, the newly adopted rules include transitional governance provisions designed to keep the AFC’s electoral and competition schedules synchronized with global adjustments.
The legislative gathering followed the fourth edition of the AFC Member Associations and Regional Associations Presidents’ and General Secretaries’ Conference 2026. Hosted in Japan for the first time, the two-day leadership event brought together 120 participants to focus on governance standards, knowledge-sharing, and leadership development across Asian football.
