The Man Who Created Singapore Football Dynasty
As the ASEAN Hyundai Cup 2026 prepares to celebrate its 30th anniversary, one coach’s name remains unmatched in the history of the regional championship — Radojko “Raddy” Avramović.
Across 15 editions of the tournament since its launch in 1996, no coach has guided a national team to more ASEAN Championship success than the Serbian, who led Singapore to three titles in 2004, 2007 and 2012.
Avramović’s remarkable spell turned Singapore into one of Southeast Asia’s dominant football forces for nearly a decade. His achievements continue to inspire the current generation, with head coach Gavin Lee hoping to revive that winning spirit as Singapore compete in the Hyundai Cup™ from July 24 to August 26.
However, Avramović’s influence went beyond the trophies. His focus on youth development, detailed preparation and teamwork helped create a disciplined side capable of competing against the region’s strongest teams.
Singapore had already secured their first ASEAN Championship crown before Avramović arrived, winning the 1998 edition under English coach Barry Whitbread after defeating hosts Vietnam in the final.
When the Serbian took charge five years later after coaching in Kuwait and Oman, Singapore were not considered likely contenders. The Lions had struggled in the previous two tournaments, exiting at the group stage in 2000 and 2002, making the success that followed under Avramović even more remarkable.
